Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives

So here is my wine review for the week of October 9th, 2005...

Pommery Chapagne

Description: Only sparkling wines made in the French Champagne region are actually "champagne." Everything else is simply sparkling wine. Champagne can range from quite dry (brut) to quite sweet
(although most champagnes that are referred to as "dry," are actually sweet). A common myth is that you have to spend a ton of money for great champagne, but I actually find Christal and Dom (both well over $100 per bottle) to be quite plain.

How to Get it: Pommery is a non-vintage champagne that can be found almost everywhere. It comes in a blue labeled bottle and is sold at almost all wine stores, warehouse stores and even many grocery stores.

How Much: It's about $28 in the stores and can be found on many restaurant wine lists for $50 a bottle, or sometimes it comes in "single serving" bottles for about $15 each in restaurants.

My Thoughts:
Since Pommery is a non-vintage champagne, it almost never changes. It's a very solid champagne that delivers a lot of bubbles and a consistently mild flavor. Not too sweet, not too dry, although it leans towards dry.

Overall Score: This is a good, solid champagne for the price. This is not a blow you away, special occasion wine. This champagne, because of it's exorbitant bubbles, would be excellent with anything extremely spicy because it would cut through the heat. It would not be ideal with dessert, as so many champagnes are. For lovers of bubbles and champagne flavor, this is a great choice. For those who like the sweeter types, this will still be ok, but not a huge favorite. For its' consistency and quality for the price, I rate 4 vines for this champagne.
