Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives
So here is my wine review for the week of April 13th, 2009...
BOGLE PETIT SIRAH 2007

Description: I got an email from a listener this week wondering what to expect from and what to serve with a bottle of Bogle 2007 Petit Sirah.
Bogle is a low end, readily available wine that relies on grapes grown from a variety of regions throughout the state of California. (The 2007 Petit Sirah grapes come from Lodi and Clarksburg). They have made a name for themselves by producing very inexpensive wines ranging in quality from adequate to surprisingly good. Sadly, their website it pathetic; When I visited it during the second weekend of April, they had clearly not updated the site in four months (listing special events including being closed on New Year’s Eve of 2008, for example)
Petit Sirah is a fantastic wine that has grown in stature this decade; For Zinfandel lovers, I believe Petit Sirah is the proper step up to a more full, bold, yet still slightly sweet red wine.
How and when I drank it: Friday April 10, 2009, at my house.
How to get it: Bogle is available at almost every grocery store west of Denver, as well as at many warehouse stores and liquor shops. Their winery is a short drive from Sacramento, situated along the delta in Clarksburg and they also sell their wines there.
How Much: Every source I checked sold the bottle for less than $10
My Thoughts: Years ago, when I was still growing my wine collection and drinking inexpensive wines occasionally, I had a few go-to labels; Meridian, Delicato, and Bogle. I am familiar with the wines and have always found them to be more than adequate for their very inexpensive price; do keep in mind, though, that you still get what you pay for. Ironically, the night before I drank this Petit Sirah I had enjoyed a bottle of Robert Foley 2004 Petit Sirah that had stopped me in my tracks upon first taste, as it was a mind blower. There is no way, in good conscience that Bogle can or should be compared to that bottle.
The Bogle Petit Sirah for 2007 is sweet, similar to a Rombauer Zinfandel; it begins with dark sweet cherries and berry flavors and is then layered with more sweetness in the forms of vanilla, cinnamon and caramel. The wine is not as full bodied or balanced as a great petit sirah should be and got old for me after two glasses. But, I did, after all, drink two full glasses. This would be a totally acceptable bottle of wine to serve with a hearty lamb dish with a cabernet sauce
Overall Score: IF you like sweeter based red wines and IF you go into the bottle expecting $10 worth of quality, you will be pleasantly surprised by this wine.
