Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives
So here is my wine review for the week of February 4th...
BOGLE PETITE SIRAH 2005

Description: Bogle has been around seemingly forever, producing mediocre/low end wines available at every grocery store around and even some convenience stores, yet they have always maintained a reputation of being a decent low priced wine. Better than Sebastiani, Gallo, and Two buck chuck, and, on a good day, equal to Kendall Jackson and Toasted Head. I, personally, have never like Bogle, finding it too fruity and pedestrian.
How and when I drank it: Saturday night, February 2, 2008 after reading a review praising the wine as a great bargain for a great wine.
How to get it: Literally almost everywhere, including grocery stores, convenience stores and the like.
How Much: It’s about $10 per bottle, sometimes dramatically lower.
My Thoughts: A great petite sirah is a big, full red wine based in fruit flavors but balanced by tannins. It is usually an exceptionally dark, almost deep purple powerhouse of a wine that is somehow approachable when done right. With that said, this is nowhere close to a traditional petite sirah, yet it is a decent red wine. I almost think they mis-labeled it. This wine is incredibly fruity, overwhelmed by flavors of berry and a little smoke on the end. This is more like a meritage blend of merlot and sirah.
Overall Score: It’s not my cup of tea, but I can certainly understand why a lot of people would really enjoy this wine. Not only is it inexpensive, it’s drinkable now and very approachable, even for people who don’t usually like red wine. I find no reason not to recommend it, unless you are a true wine lover and are looking for a real sirah/syrah. 4 vines.
