Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives
So here is my wine review for the week of March 16th, 2009...
CLINE SYRAH SONOMA COAST COOL CLIMATE 2006

Description: Back we go this week to my on-going attempt to find lower priced , accessible wines that offer quality without breaking your bank. Ironically, it is in these more challenging economic times when we all need a drink now and then, yet many have a hard affording one!
Cline is a small, family run winery in Sonoma producing mid-level wines under cooler climate conditions than Napa Valley. They produce a lot of different wines, seemingly by using their grapes in a mix and match sort of design to create as much as possible to sell. Such a system would never work if you were attempting to sell high end wines, but they don’t seem to have their sights set very high.
How and when I drank it: Sunday March 15, 2009, at my house.
How to get it: They sell their wine on their website and at their Sonoma winery, and it can also be found at some wine specialty stores..
How Much: The winery sells it for $16 per bottle
My Thoughts: Most syrahs are big, dark and rich. This is not like most syrahs. In fact, if you would have poured this blindly for me, I would have guessed it was either a cheap merlot or cab. That’s not to say that the wine doesn’t have appeal and character, just know what you’re getting yourself into. This is a very fruity red wine, complete with actual grape flavors on the finish. Far from a complex or impressive wine, this is a simple, medium body, fruit filled red wine.
Overall Score: I am told this wine can be found occasionally for as little as $10. Even if you paid twice that, this is a very simple, fairly lame wine; you could easily buy Bogle, Meridian or Decato and get a much nicer wine for the same or less money. 1 Vine.
