Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives

So here is my wine review for the week of February 2nd, 2009...

DOZ CABEZAS ARIZONA EL NORTE COCHISE COUNTY

Description: What’s that you say? You didn’t know they made wine in Arizona? Truth is that a decade ago as the wine boom was taking over America, anyone with a sustainable warm climate began planting grapevines. With the slowing economy and recent success of Lodi, Paso Robles, Santa Barbara and other places producing mediocre or better wines for a fraction of Napa Valley’s costs, people are looking for cheaper ways to get drunk and forget how broke they are.

How and when I drank it:  Saturday, January 31, 2009 at my house.

How to get it: It’s easily accessible via the internet as the fairly new idea of Arizona wine continues to take hold nationally. This winery has a website, although it’s one of the worst I’ve ever seen so good luck with that.

How Much: The bottle is listed at $22 new from the winery, although I’m sure you can get it below $15 if you can find it. My bottle came from a friend who lives in Arizona.

My Thoughts: Bear in mind that I still don’t get why people drink any red wine that isn’t from Napa (and yes that includes France and Italy). Napa is simply the place for red wine and my palette to spend all of eternity together. This wine is a blend of mainly Petite Syrah, syrah and Grenache. It is garnering fairly positive reviews from most wine publications, but do not count me among them. While the wine is fine, it is far from impressive and at near $20, you can do a lot better. This wine is nicely colored with a dark ruby red almost purple coloring but the flavors are thin, unbalanced and scream “here comes a headache.” Nothing says amateur red wine making more than a musty finish.

Overall Score:  There are still high quality wines coming out of Napa at or below the $20 mark which deliver a lot more balance and consistency than this wine does. If you’re looking for a bargain wine, head to Costco and buy some Napa reds…Arizona doesn’t get it yet.
1 Vine.
