Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives
So here is my wine review for the week of February 7th, 2009...
LEWIS CELLARS ALEC'S BLEND 2006

Description: Lewis Cellars came to fame early this decade as one of the many new Napa Valley wineries producing big time red wines. Alec’s blend is apparently named after some kid related to the Lewis family (I didn’t care enough to research it, I just want to know if the wine is good or not). Some unique things about the wine are the price and the blend; Lewis sells some wines for as much as $225, yet this meritage is just $60 from the winery. Additionally, this blend uniquely relies most heavily on syrah (70%) and adds in just 20% merlot and 10.
How and when I drank it: Friday, February 13, 2009, at my house.
How to get it: The winery website is sold out, but a Google search yielded multiple sites selling the wine.
How Much: The bottle is listed at $60 new from the winery, although the average price online was closer to $50.
My Thoughts: There are many things that make big, red Napa wines the greatest on Earth in my opinion; most notably, however, is Napa’s unique ability to produce silky smooth red wines full of flavor that finish with no bite on the tongue. Such qualities epitomize why I revere Phelps Insignia; this wine is almost as impressive (and when you factor in a bargain basement price relative to other reds of such quality…)
Overall Score:Initial flavors of light chocolate quickly change to dark berries and finish with a gracious, lush, smooth vanilla finish; it’s almost a perfect bottle of wine, and at or near $50 is an absolute steal. Find this wine online now and order as many bottles as you can for your collection.
5 Vines.
