Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives

So here is my wine review for the week of July 14th...

PRIDE SYRAH 2006

Description: An admittedly difficult wine to find and by, the Syrah from Pride wines remains an exclusive bottling for wine club members, loyal customers and a few wine merchants and restaurants. Pride remains at the top of my favorites list for qualitative and sentimental reasons (it’s where I proposed to my wife) 10 years after I first discovered them.

Made with 100% syrah grapes and aged in stainless steel, the Pride Syrah boasts an alcohol content of more than 15% and was released in May of 2008.

How and when I drank it: Monday afternoon, June 16th at my house.

How to get it: Sometimes the winery has some on-site if you visit them to do a tasting (appointment only). Other than that, you need to stumble upon a merchant, online seller or restaurant that carries it.

How Much:
The winery sells it for $60

My Thoughts:
This is a gigantic, wonderful Syrah that will be even better in 3-5 years. At first taste, fresh from opening, the wine is slightly tannic and a little dry, but overpowered by an enormous balance of vanilla and dark berry flavors. As the wine opens up throughout the day the flavors and aromas of dense earth come through and add body to an already well structured wine. The flavors add in some dark chocolate on the finish and the dryness softens but remains.

Overall Score:
I would find some of this, age it for at least 3 years and make sure to open it, let it breathe and decant it before drinking it. After doing all that, you’ll have a very enjoyable, dark red wine. 4 vines.
