Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives

So here is my wine review for the week of July 20th, 2009...

ROAD I RED TABLE WINE

Description: Road I Red is a meritage blend made by Weibel Estates in Hopland, CA. Named after a dirt road that runs along their property where bordering grapes grow and are used for this wine, the Road I is part of Weibel’s multiple labels and wine varietals.

Oddly, though their website claims that “An ever-changing blend of grapes year-to-year,” creates the wine, it has no vintage date attached to it. This is ponderous in the least.

How and when I drank it: Saturday, June 29th at my house.

How to get it: In many par

How Much: The winery lists the bottle at $50 but may places sell it for as low as $35. AT Fresh Cream. They were nailing people for $20 per glass.

My Thoughts: This is exactly what I would expect from a lower-end red wine blend; it’s fine and fruity. Nothing wrong with it, nothing to scream about. The flavors are mainly dark fruits, blackberries, dark cherries, some plum and very little balanced. It’s not sweet nor dry and it has a pleasant though far from velvety feel and finish to it. For a red wine novice, this would be a great wine to begin making the transition to more serious reds. For those who love big, bold, balanced reds, this would be a great wine to cook ribs in.

Overall Score: Given the price, it’s fine and even pleasant for some folks, but overall this is far from a serious California red wine. I can recommend it easily to a novice, but if you’re a red wine lover just looking for a bargain, this won’t suit you.
2 Vines.
