Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives So here is my wine review for the week of July 24th, 2006... SOBON ESTATE 2004 FIDDLETOWN ZINFANDEL
Description: This is another "local" wine, grown in Amador county. It is advertised as a big red ready for rich dishes. I drank it with a palette of thinly sliced prosciutto. How to Get it: It's all over the place in the Sacramento area, including all BevMo stores, which is where I got it, courtesy of Mike, the manager of the Roseville store. How Much: It's about $15. My Thoughts: Let's start with the cork, or lack there of. This is a raging controversy in the wine world. Many progessive's want to move to screw tops, arguing that it keeps the wine better. Purists want cork for all of the cork trapping found in wine lore. Personally, I don't care as long as the wine is good, but one note; make the screw top easier to get off. The label needs a pull tape to remove and expose the cap, similar to champagne. As for the wine, Zin is not my thing traditionally and neither is non-Napa wine. I am a snob and I admit it. However, as non-Napa zins go, this isn't bad. It's far too fruity for my tastes, but it does have a big finish to it that should please traditional zin lovers.
