Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives

So here is my wine review for the week of March 19th...

Turnbull 2005 Old Bull Red Table Wine

Description: Turnbull has turned some heads in the past few years by producing some respectable reds at reasonable prices and making their wines accessible via stores like Sam's Club. The Old Bull is a little harder to find and is a blend of mainly merlot with some tempranillo and Syrah and petit Sirah added in.

How to Get it: It's available on-line and at the winery in Napa as well as Bevmo and other wine merchants.

How Much: About $20.

My Thoughts: This is advertised by the winery as a "summer bbq" wine which always sends up a red flag for me because it usually means the wine is too fruity and a little thin. I found the 2005 old Bull to be a pleasant surprise with a great fruity beginning, but a surprisingly full finish of vanilla and oak, and with no tannic bite. The body wasn't thin, either, which means I'll avoid that awful headache that comes from overrated red wines, like, say, every Pinot Noir ever made.

Overall Score: At only $20 per bottle this is a great, casual, everyday wine, which may be why they market is for Summer BBQ's, but I think they sell the wine short with that label. 4 vines.
