Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives

So here is my wine review for the week of August 4th...

VOSS VINEYARDS SYRAH 2003

Description: Having nothing to do with the bottled water of the same name, Voss is a small Napa valley winery attempting to produce mid-level unique wines. They make both a Syrah and a shiraz, as well as a Ocala, Viognier and a few interesting looking blends.

How and when I drank it: Saturday afternoon, July 26th at Paul Martin’s American Bistro in Roseville, CA where it is served by the glass for about $10.

How to get it: I found it on plenty of on-line wine merchants, but on the Voss website, they had absolutely no information about how to buy their wines which is stunningly stupid. Their website is very informative otherwise, they just forgot that one little datil involving how to actually buy the stuff. Amazing.

How Much:
It seems to be about $20 almost everywhere it’s sold

My Thoughts:
The wine is a nice, deep red syrah as it should be. The aromas are dark and full, mainly consisting of dark berries and some wood and licorice. The flavor is somewhat overwhelmed by the tannins, which causes the wine to deliver more of a bite than a great syrah should have. I would like this wine to age for another 3-5 years before trying ti again because at this point, it seems too young, too tight and a bit tart.

Overall Score:
At $20 per bottle and $10 per glass, this is an unacceptable wine. It is too young and tight, and did not seem to improve as I allowed it to breath. This means the wine either needs to mature or just plain sucks. I believe it’s the former, as I can taste some potential behind the tannins. Well made Syrah’s, however, should be drinkable right away so for this wine, a thumbs down.
