So here is my wine review for the week of June 15th, 2009...
2007 CHARDONNAY REPORT
Description: It’s been a very mild spring in Northern California/Northern Nevada and many of us have enjoyed the absence of temperatures in the 90s and 100s, which would be expected this time of year. We know this will end however, and hot days are coming. For wine lovers, heat means it’s time to break out fresh, cool chardonnay.
Over the past few weeks I have gathered up a few well known, long standing bottles of Chardonnay and given them a taste for you so that I could present a guide of possible choices, based on what you like in a chardonnay.
How and when I drank it: From May 16 Through June 13th at my house
How to get it: Almost all of the wines I tasted are available at Bevmo and at the wineries in Napa. Many are also easily found in grocery stores and some warehouse stores.
How Much: Prices listed below next to each bottle, along with the bottle’s score
Overall Score: This is a fantastic warm weather white wine. Served perfectly chilled, this is a very refreshing wine that quenches thirst, drinks easily and tastes great.
My Thoughts:
 |
Rombauer 2007 ($30)
Always one of my favorites, Romabuer has sadly lightened up on its signature “Buttery” flavor over the years. This is still a creamy, fruity Chradonnay with some oak. |
 |
Cakebread 2007 ($35)
For the price, this is an average wine heavy on the citrus fruit with a strong oak finish. Unbalanced and pleasant, but only fine. |
 |
Far Niente 2007 ($50)
I’ve never gotten this wine; it’s gotten by on its name for years; this yet another over rated bottle that is wound tight, relies on fruit and toast flavors but never delivers. |
 |
Ferrari-Carano 2007 ($25-$35)
Carano is producing multiple Chardonnays now and they’re all very good, relying on crisp fruit flavors, some oak and big finishes. My favorites o the batch this year. |
 |
Souverain 2007 ($25)
Easily found at Costco and many grocery stores, this is an affordable, balanced, creamy and fruity chardonnay. Similar to Rombauer and very good. |
