Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives

So here is my wine review for the week of April 3rd, 2006...

Chateau Souverain Chardonnay 2004

Description: Spring, and the warmer weather that is supposed to come with it (eventually) brings about the desire to enjoy cool, crisp white wines and the release of the new Chardonnay lot. Chateau Souverain has long been a mid-priced wine from the Northern Napa Valley that produces high quality wine fit for everyday consumption without sacrificing taste and body.

How to Get it: Sam's and Costco carry it quite a bit, it's also readily available at Bemo, most wine stores, on-line and even some grocery stores.

How Much: It's about $15-20 per bottle.

My Thoughts: There are, in my opinion only two types of chardonnay; those dominated by oak (which usually then have great hints of toast, earth, honey and vanilla) and those dominated by butter (which are more fruity with lots of apricot, apple, pear, etc). Both are excellent, when done right and served at 55 degrees. This chardonnay is closer to the second, more buttery version, although the butter is suppressed by the fruit. This a very fruity chardonnay dominated by citrus and apple flavors. It drinks well, slightly tangy and very refreshing.

Overall Score: You simply can't beat this wine for the price. It is true of so many of their varietals and this one doesn't disappoint. You'll taste plenty of better white wines, but this is a totally acceptable $15 bottle of Chardonnay that would stand next to plenty of wines twice the cost. 4 Vines
