Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives

So here is my wine review for the week of April 16th...

Luna Pinot Grigio 2005

Description: I drink very little white wine, but as the weather warms heading into May, all winos will crave the occasional crisp chilled white wine. Luna has for years made the Cadillac of Grigio, a white wine that, when done correctly, is crisp, refreshing, and perfectly balanced between fruit, vanilla and butter with no toast or oak.

How to Get it: It's available at some Bevmos, most wine merchants, on-line, tons of restaurant wine lists and at the winery in Napa.

How Much: About $20-25 per bottle. I had it by the glass at the Napa restaurant Bistro Don Giovanni

My Thoughts: I don't usually give a rat's ear about matching food to wine, for my opinion is drink wine you love with food you love and everything will work out. However, I drank a glass of Grigio by itself and it was wonderful, then paired it with an arugala salad, topped with a lemon/parmesan/olive oil dressing and the wine held up to it and complimented it perfectly. This year's Luna once again presents crisp subtle fruit flavors from apples, apricots and pairs, but the fruit flavor is balanced and not allowed to become overbearing by the wonderful vanilla sage crispness that lingers on the finish.

Overall Score: This is a great wine which you can drink right now, just make sure that you serve it very cold! (I like 45-50 degrees). 4 ½ vines.
