Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives
So here is my wine review for the week of August 8th, 2005...
Markham 2003 Chardonnay
Description: Chardonnay is the Cadillac of white wine, which is very popular in the heat. Served at 50 degrees, a great chardonnay will cool you off and refresh you. Chardonnays can be fruity, buttery, or toasty with oak flavors.
How to Get it: I got this bottle at Sam's Club but Markham has become a much more accessible wine in the past few years. You can find it in some grocery stores and most wine shops.
How Much: It is generally $12-18 in most stores, $20-30 in restaurants.
My Thoughts: This was a pleasant surprise after spending only $11 on the bottle at Sam's. This Chardonnay has 2 of the three possible Chardonnay flavors. It lacks butter, but has fruity dominance with toasty oak overtones in the aftertaste. The wine is a little thin, but the flavors are complex enough that it is a very pleasant drink if you like apples, apricots, and toasty oak.
Overall Score: For the price, it's a great drink. The only thing this Chardonnay lacks is full body, which would add to it's experience. For under $15, you aren't going to find many Chardonnays that offer as many flavors. On my 5 vine scale, I give this wine a 4½ .
