Wine Reviews

Rob's "Wine of the Week" Archives

So here is my wine review for the week of April 9th...

Phelps Le Mistral 2004

Description: I try to review the Phelps Mistral every year because I find it to be a very accessible, reasonably priced red wine that usually produces good to great quality. The Mistral is a red wine blend of Syrah, Petite Sirah, Grenache and Alicante Bouschet..

How to Get it: It's available at some Bevmos, some grocery stores, most wine merchants, on-line, occasionally at Costco and at the winery in Napa.

How Much: About $20 - $25.

My Thoughts: This year's Mistral is more complex and full bodied than previous years, but it still provides a nice young red that can be drunk now without an enormous tannic bite on the finish. Look for flavors of coffee, wood, tobacco and a smooth finish cherry vanilla. Don't be fooled by the initial deep plum flavors that may concern you of a prune consistency, the wine opens up quickly and evens out to a very pleasant drink.

Overall Score: This is a great wine which you can drink now or save for 2-3 years. At less than $30 this a must have in the cellar for any important weeknight. 4 vines.
