Congratulations!
You have finally landed on the one page on this entire site (and on the entire internet for that matter) that is purely without bullshit... my soapbox page. There are a lot of times during our show that, whether it's because of time constraints and other obligations, I don't always get to address some issues that I feel don't get the attention they deserve. There are even more times when I just don't feel like waiting until the show the next day to get some things off my chest. Thus, I have started the "Rob's Soapbox" page. If you have clicked on this page looking for someone to coddle your fragile sense of self-esteem, or tell you what you want to hear or to reinforce your outdated world view, then exit this page right now and go somewhere else. If you are in search of the last forum for reason and common sense left in the world, then sit back, relax, and enjoy. I make only one promise with this soapbox page... if you read long enough and often enough, you will eventually be offended. So here's my latest soapbox. Listen up, 'cause you just might learn something... |

June 2 , 2003 The Asinine Things You People Say... Part 10 I have started referring to my "favorite" (insert sarcasm here) phone calls into the show as "Hall of Fame" calls. Anytime I see on my computer screen that someone is ready to make a complete ass of themselves by making a comment we have addressed 1,000 times before, I now use that term. Over the next few weeks, months, Hell maybe years, I will document them all for you in this forum. Week number ten's entry is "You would sell a lot more RAD merchandise if you were donating part of the money to charity." First of all, we are already selling too much stuff. Thanks to the fact that we have the greatest and most loyal listeners (we're running out of rooms big enough to hold our live events for Christ's Teeth) we have sold out of commuter mugs and numerous sizes of shirts long before we expected to. In fact, we're having to re-evaluate our entire plan. We initially purchased a few thousand units of product to sell over the next few years, not months, so, thank you! Secondly, one thing this show doesn't need to do is justify its involvement with charities. We are quite proud of the number of wonderful organizations we help every year. In 2002, through our annual Rob, Arnie and Dawnathon, live broadcasts, on-air auctions and live events, we helped raise more than $500,000 for the UCD Children's Hospital, Leukemia Society, Ronald McDonald House, Wind Youth Center, Big Brothers Big Sisters and other great charitable organizations. The thing that really bothers me about the assertion that we should "give some money to charity" is two-fold. On one hand, is the hype buy-in. Statements like this actually prove what lemmings the American public is. We have become such an emotional, feel-good, namby-pamby society that all we have to hear is something that makes us FEEL like we're helping people, and we'll bite. Well, here's the truth folks. When you see TV people and hear radio people selling shirts, jackets, hats and like and giving a "portion of the proceeds" to charity that portion is almost always negligible, like, say 3 cents on every dollar. You're not helping and neither are they. Trust me on this, I've been in the business for 15 years and seen the scam a million times. We talked about this prior to selling merchandise on our website and realized we couldn't do it. Even Arnie didn't have the conscience to lie to you like that. So, if nothing else, give us credit for not trying to fool you. Also, where did this idea in America come from that capitalism is bad? What the Hell is wrong with trying to make a little extra money? Oh, that's right, the 60's happened and told us all that Capitalism was wrong and trying to get ahead was evil, and that we all should feel guilty for being better than other countries, don't get me started, that's another whole Soap Box. Now, click over to the buy RAD Stuff Icon and buy some stuff, none of which will go to charity.
