SOAPBOX ARCHIVES

Congratulations!

You have finally landed on the one page on this entire site (and on the entire internet for that matter) that is purely without bullshit... my soapbox page. There are a lot of times during our show that, whether it's because of time constraints and other obligations, I don't always get to address some issues that I feel don't get the attention they deserve. There are even more times when I just don't feel like waiting until the show the next day to get some things off my chest. Thus, I have started the "Rob's Soapbox" page. If you have clicked on this page looking for someone to coddle your fragile sense of self-esteem, or tell you what you want to hear or to reinforce your outdated world view, then exit this page right now and go somewhere else. If you are in search of the last forum for reason and common sense left in the world, then sit back, relax, and enjoy. I make only one promise with this soapbox page... if you read long enough and often enough, you will eventually be offended. So here's my latest soapbox. Listen up, 'cause you just might learn something...

THE EARTH WILL ALWAYS WIN

Hurricanes Katrina and Rita have rekindled the cries of "Chicken Little, the sky is falling," from the environmental movement. Completely discarding history and science, uninformed people who proclaim to "love the Earth," are running around making claims that Global warming, the hole in the Ozone layer and mankind itself are causing a massive shift on our weather pattern. That would be really neat if there were any truth in it.

The entire environmental movement is flawed in its premise, presentation and alleged goal. People walk around proclaiming that they are environmentalists without having any idea what that really means. Think about it; who actually hates the Earth? No one. Of course people say that they love the planet and they want to help "save" the planet. It's a great pitch. Unfortunately, it's one giant lie.

The planet does not need saving. As comedian George Carlin once famously said, "The Earth is fine, it's the people that are fucked up."

The height of human arrogance is on display in the environmental movement. Small-minded people walk around believing that we, puny, tiny little humans, actually have the power and capability to damage the Earth, a ball of matter whose
very existence and origin we still can't explain. The Earth is the greatest living organism known to mankind and it is completely beyond our realm of comprehension. We don't know how it got here, how long it really has been here, what exactly makes it float in the sky, or how long it will be here. We just know that it was here before we were, and it will be around a lot longer than we will.

We know that the planet Earth has sustained over 4 billion years of non-stop abuse, long before puny humans arrived. The Earth has suffered catastrophic ice storms, meteor showers, volcanic eruptions, tectonic plate shifts, worldwide floods and fires, bombardment by asteroids and comets, hurricanes, tornadoes, periods of time much warmer than the global temperature of today, monstrous earthquakes, inhabitation by dinosaurs, solar flares, sun spots, the magnetic reversal of the poles, and so much more. Yet we have the audacity to proclaim that our very presence and behavior is somehow noticeable to the Earth.

For 4 billion years the Earth has cleansed and healed itself from all of the above mentioned catastrophes and made itself stronger and better. By the way, we can't explain how it does that, either. Yet we're sure that we will be the end of the Earth. We're the Earth's Lex Luther, if you will. We have forged the Earth's Kryptonite and its name is Styrofoam. Please, can we tone done the conceit just a little here?

Hurricanes Katrina and Rita were a reminder of just how small we are. Never mind the political aftermath and the controversy surrounding such, the point that must not be lost here is that we were helpless to stop the hurricanes and in two full days, Mother Nature destroyed decades of human work. New Orleans was destroyed. Hello! One of America's greatest cities, with buildings that in some cases boggled the mind (including the Superdome) were turned into crap. Decades of blood, sweat, tears and man hours were brought down with one wave of Mother Nature's hand. Yet, we continue to believe that we're a threat to the planet. The planet, to whatever extent it has any cognitive ability, will dispose of and dispense with us anytime it's ready. The planet is in charge here, not us.

That is truly the rub in the environmental argument. No one wants to harm the Earth, and the truth is that even if we did, we couldn't. We don't possess the comprehension or ability to harm this amazing home of ours. So go ahead and build your enormous structures of architectural wonderment. Just remember that the Earth will knock it down whenever it wants to. Go ahead and build as many "sea walls," and earthquake-safe buildings you see fit to. Just remember that the Earth will knock them down whenever it wants to. You can't beat something that you don't understand. The Earth and its creator are so far beyond our ability to even guess, let alone comprehend at their meaning that we can't fathom their strength. That's why the Earth will always win.
