SOAPBOX ARCHIVES

Congratulations!

You have finally landed on the one page on this entire site (and on the entire internet for that matter) that is purely without bullshit... my soapbox page. There are a lot of times during our show that, whether it's because of time constraints and other obligations, I don't always get to address some issues that I feel don't get the attention they deserve. There are even more times when I just don't feel like waiting until the show the next day to get some things off my chest. Thus, I have started the "Rob's Soapbox" page. If you have clicked on this page looking for someone to coddle your fragile sense of self-esteem, or tell you what you want to hear or to reinforce your outdated world view, then exit this page right now and go somewhere else. If you are in search of the last forum for reason and common sense left in the world, then sit back, relax, and enjoy. I make only one promise with this soapbox page... if you read long enough and often enough, you will eventually be offended. So here's my latest soapbox. Listen up, 'cause you just might learn something...

INSPIRED BY DAWN:
THINGS THAT I AM POSITIVE ABOUT

Our rose-colored glasses wearing flower, Dawn, sometimes refers to this space as the "bitch box," because she feels that all I do is bitch and moan about the state of our society. I counter that bitching and moaning about things that are true is necessary in life, but like most liberals, Dawn doesn't like anything that she and her fellow "libbers" perceive to be mean, no matter how true. With that, Dawn said last week on the air, "Why can't you write something positive for a change." Alas, I give you a series of things I am positive about:

I am positive that I am right about the fact that America has peaked and is now on the down-side of its' bell curve. A great leader may emerge to stop the spiral, but it's not likely given our corrupt political system. In the 1940's and 50's we had achieved near perfection as a nation that was strong and not afraid to show it, yet still prosperous and offering of opportunity to all. Martin Luther King Jr. led the charge to right the final glaring wrong of our society and then…we screwed up. The hippie led counter culture decade of the 60's began the destruction of our great nation and we haven't recovered since. The end is nowhere in sight. I am positive of that.

I am positive that the people of America are, based on my calculations, made up of 95% jerks. As the decay of our nation goes, so does its' people. Or perhaps it began with the people and trickled up. Either way, people are rude, irresponsible, and ignorant. I am positive that no nation has ever been so great while being filled with so many imbeciles.

I am positive that being fat is a sign of hating yourself. If you cared at all, you wouldn't allow yourself to be so abhorrent.

I am positive that unruly kids are the result of bad parenting. Kids are not born bad, that's just something that people say to alleviate themselves of responsibility.

I am positive that people in America continue to transfer their ignorance and self absorption to the roads of America. Driving today is nothing more than a spectator sport of the truly appalling in our culture. Changing lanes without looking, driving slow in the fast lane and stopping for no reason are just 3 of the 1,985 things I see everyday as people drive that reminds why we suck as a people.

I am positive that Barry Bonds has always been a horrible human being. Now tell me why I shouldn't be positive that he's also a cheater.

I am positive that we are destroying our nation's future by over-coddling our children. We have spent two decades now teaching them that "good enough is good enough as long as you try," and that there is a pedophile hiding around every corner. Neither of these things is true and that's why these children remain children when they are of adult age. They sue people when they don't get the job they wanted because they always got picked for the sports team they wanted to play on, not because they were good enough but because people said it was only "fair." They are afraid of failure because they were never taught how to confront it and overcome it. Meanwhile, India and China continue to outclass us and raise the next great generation. We should be ashamed. I am positive of that.

I am positive that the golf clubs are not the problem in Arnie's golf game. He is. Until he realizes that, he will struggle and continue to flounder back and forth between good days and really bad days. I am also positive that he will not appreciate this particular portion of this Soapbox. (Note to Arnie: Luv ya buddy!)

I am positive that death is a part of life and being afraid of it is a waste of time and energy. Additionally, all of these absurd road-side memorials and the like are offensive to the living and the dead. Move the Hell on and stop making a spectacle of your mourning.

I am positive that symbolism like wearing a red ribbon or shaving your head in honor of your friend with cancer is pure garbage, and it's meaningless. Either do something to help or don't, but don't parade yourself around as something great when you are, in fact, contributing nothing to the cause.

I am positive that no matter how many feel-good laws you pass, people will still find ways to hurt themselves. Let them smoke. Let them ride their hogs and stop worrying about people other than yourself. Trust me, you have plenty of things that need work first.

I am positive that somehow I will be accused of being negative for the truths that I write. There's just no pleasing some people.
