Congratulations!
You have finally landed on the one page on this entire site (and on the entire internet for that matter) that is purely without bullshit... my soapbox page. There are a lot of times during our show that, whether it's because of time constraints and other obligations, I don't always get to address some issues that I feel don't get the attention they deserve. There are even more times when I just don't feel like waiting until the show the next day to get some things off my chest. Thus, I have started the "Rob's Soapbox" page. If you have clicked on this page looking for someone to coddle your fragile sense of self-esteem, or tell you what you want to hear or to reinforce your outdated world view, then exit this page right now and go somewhere else. If you are in search of the last forum for reason and common sense left in the world, then sit back, relax, and enjoy. I make only one promise with this soapbox page... if you read long enough and often enough, you will eventually be offended. So here's my latest soapbox. Listen up, 'cause you just might learn something... |

February 20th, 2006 SO, HOW DID YOU CELEBRATE PRESIDENT'S DAY?America's calendar is riddled with holidays meant to honor people and events which are rarely properly recognized. Most of you give nary a second thought to the greatest nation on Earth every 4th of July. Very few of you pay any sort of homage to all those who died to preserve your freedom on Veteran's Day or Memorial Day. Perhaps most abhorrent is Christmas, when in a sick attempt to preserve some type of salvation, millions of you hypocritically go to Church for the only time in the entire year. Yeah, God loves that. The truth is that holidays in America are wasted and taken for granted. They are days set aside for barbeques, family dinners and ski trips, not days used to honor the people or events meant to receive praise and recognition. Lame public events are put on in a weak attempt to make it appear as though we are remembering the spirit of the day, but those events are sparsely attended and paid very little attention. This brings us to the just passed President's Day, a day that is no longer meant to honor the greatest leaders of our nation's history, but rather has become the "end of the ski season" weekend. It's your one last chance to "hang 10 and flip a quarter pipe," or whatever it is that you people do with your skis and poles. George Washington and Abraham Lincoln define what America is supposed to be and used to be all about. America was once the nation of greatness, leadership, prosperity and success. Washington and Lincoln came from a time when we actually encouraged people to succeed, rather than chiding them for taking chances and then punishing them when they achieved their goals. Those two men, separated in history by almost 100 years, are our two greatest historical figures, yet most of this nation ignores and forgets them and what they meant to us. Most people who still acknowledge Washington and Lincoln do so in a way meant to disparage and slander what the men actually achieved. Our schools teach kids that Washington was a bumbling racist idiot who was lucky to have won the Revolutionary war and Lincoln was a foolish, adulterous hypocrite who had little to do with the outcome of the Civil War. Hell, I wouldn't want to honor those two guys either. Sadly, the revision of history doesn't make it true. Washington and Lincoln both saved this nation and had it not been for their existence and leadership, America would not be what it is today. Throughout time, people come and go who are interchangeable with others. For example, 9/11 would have happened exactly the same way if Al Gore would have been president. The San Francisco 49ers still would have won the 1994 Super Bowl had they played the Pittsburgh Steelers instead of the Chargers. However, if you replace George Washington as the commander of the Revolutionary Army (which almost happened numerous times) America never wins that war. If Lincoln isn't President in 1861, this nation spirals out of control. Some argue that events are pre-determined and people such as Washington and Lincoln are simply in the right place at the right time…people who believe tripe like this simply are incapable of understanding greatness. Sadly, people with that thought process seem to be permeating our society and slowly stripping away our nation's greatness.
