SOAPBOX ARCHIVES

Congratulations!

You have finally landed on the one page on this entire site (and on the entire internet for that matter) that is purely without bullshit... my soapbox page. There are a lot of times during our show that, whether it's because of time constraints and other obligations, I don't always get to address some issues that I feel don't get the attention they deserve. There are even more times when I just don't feel like waiting until the show the next day to get some things off my chest. Thus, I have started the "Rob's Soapbox" page. If you have clicked on this page looking for someone to coddle your fragile sense of self-esteem, or tell you what you want to hear or to reinforce your outdated world view, then exit this page right now and go somewhere else. If you are in search of the last forum for reason and common sense left in the world, then sit back, relax, and enjoy. I make only one promise with this soapbox page... if you read long enough and often enough, you will eventually be offended. So here's my latest soapbox. Listen up, 'cause you just might learn something...

THE HOPEFUL END OF THE AMERICAN ROYAL FAMILIES

I rarely make bold political proclamations, but here comes one; Hillary Clinton will not be the next president of the United States. How and why she fails to occupy the White House come January 2009 is still debatable, but of the outcome I am certain; and with her failure will bring to an end America's most embarrassing run of allowing the domestic equivalent of royal families.

College freshmen this year (and anyone born before them) have never known a United States of America which wasn't presided over by either a Bush or a Clinton. At no time in our history have we allowed the cliché of power resting at the feet of only just a few be perpetuated so loudly as in the past 18 years. When our current president leaves in January 2009 it will be 20 years to the day since his father was sworn in as President, beginning the run of Bush/Clinton/Clinton/Bush/Bush covering the past 5 terms of American presidents. We, the people, have had enough. It's time to allow a new last name to occupy the White House (actually it was time a few terms ago but that's another story).

Further preying on our Bush/Clinton fatigue over the past years has been the chummy behavior exhibited by the 3 former and current Presidents, all of whom seem to be happy to hang-out and guffaw together, almost as though they are collectively pointing and laughing at the rest of us dullards who they so proudly "rule" over. Jeb Bush, the current President's brother and former governor of Florida, saw the writing on the wall years ago and despite being a very popular governor decided not to run for President in 2008. Hillary should have made the same choice.

As for how and why Hillary will miss the White House, the possibilities are endless and intriguing to those of us who are captivated by American politics:

OBAMA WINS THE NOMINATION: Barack Obama, senator from Illinois, is enjoying rock-star status right now thanks to his natural charisma. He's getting a total pass in the media on both his lack of experience and his socialist/communist policies and is therefore building up a nice head of steam. If he can maintain his momentum for the rest of the year and head into 2008 as the front-runner, he may just become the first African American candidate for President of the United States.

A DIFFERENT DEMOCRAT WINS THE NOMINATION: A few weeks ago, Hollywood mogul David Geffen said what we all have thought for decades; we all think all politicians lie, and none have ever lied so much or so well as the Clintons. Once that was said publicly, the emperor-ess had no clothes and rats have been scurrying off the U.S.S. Hillary in droves. Buoyed by the truth being spoken out loud, more and more democrats are publicly voicing their own misgivings about Hillary and her electabilitly. While Obama is the current sexy choice to swoop in and land the nomination, Democrats, in modern history, traditionally wind up nominating a dark-horse candidate. John Kerry was all but dead in 2004 and came out of nowhere to win the nod, same with Bill Clinton in 1992. Granted, with the onslaught of primaries occurring on February 5, 2008 for the first time the likelihood that a January non-front runner can win is now far less.

HILLARY IS THE DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENT BUT LOSES: It's still very possible that Democrats will nominate Hillary to run for the White House. Not only does she have a ton of money saved up for the campaign, she also has the greatest political attack machine ever and could easily smear her opponents into submission. However, Hillary is gravely un-electable against almost any Republican candidate and certainly against John McCain or Rudy Giuliani. Unless the Republicans wind up running an O.J./Satan ticket against her, she simply can't win.

HILLARY IS THE DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENT BUT DOESN'T MAKE IT TO ELECTION DAY: This is the creepiest and I hope, most unlikely, scenario. One has to consider, however, that there are still enough whack jobs in America who possess enough misogyny in them to be adamantly opposed to the idea of a woman, any woman, winning the presidency. I do not wish for, crave, or endorse such a turn of events in any way, but I acknowledge the history and mindset of my country enough to accept its shortcomings and potential flaws.

There is of course, the less than likely scenario that Hillary will find herself the democratic nominee for president, pitted against a moderate Republican nominee (think: Rudy Giuliani) who then forces the far right wing of the country to demand a third party candidate who is more socially conservative. Such a scenario would create a scene eerily similar to 1992 when Bill Clinton was first elected as Ross Perot shaved 19% of the popular vote and cost the first George H.W. Bush a second term (this is not commentary on my part, but rather widely accepted historical fact; had it not been for Perot Bush would have beaten Clinton in 1992).

Should Hillary find herself running against Giuliani and someone from the far-right (what I call a "Limbaugh Republican") she would hope that they would split their vote and she would be elected president with about 40% of the popular vote. I still maintain that while this is possible, it is far from probable. Hillary is un-electable in my opinion and I believe that the American public has had enough of the royal family hierarchy we've been living with for more than a generation now. I wonder, though, what would be the outcome if the third party candidate was Jeb Bush?
