Congratulations!
You have finally landed on the one page on this entire site (and on the entire internet for that matter) that is purely without bullshit... my soapbox page. There are a lot of times during our show that, whether it's because of time constraints and other obligations, I don't always get to address some issues that I feel don't get the attention they deserve. There are even more times when I just don't feel like waiting until the show the next day to get some things off my chest. Thus, I have started the "Rob's Soapbox" page. If you have clicked on this page looking for someone to coddle your fragile sense of self-esteem, or tell you what you want to hear or to reinforce your outdated world view, then exit this page right now and go somewhere else. If you are in search of the last forum for reason and common sense left in the world, then sit back, relax, and enjoy. I make only one promise with this soapbox page... if you read long enough and often enough, you will eventually be offended. So here's my latest soapbox. Listen up, 'cause you just might learn something... |

March 20th, 2006 RIGHT-WING WHACKOS GONE BERZERKThere is a theory in American politics that dictates that no one political party should be given too much of the power at any given time for if they are, they will allow their lunatic, whacko fringe members to start running things and destroy America's founding notion of checks and balances. Survey after survey reveals that the American people, despite their ignorance and apathy towards their own government, still desire a balanced government (for example, a Republican president and a democratically controlled congress, or vice-versa). There is, of course, a precedent for such formulas. During the booming Clinton 90's, a Republican congress deserves much of the credit for what was accomplished. During the Reagan 80's, when America asserted itself as the one and only Super Power, the Democratic congress and Reagan's storied relationship with Speaker of the House Tip O' Neill played a major role in our successes. A quick note to you ideologues; spare me your asinine letters. I hate both political parties equally and find our system to be corrupt and beholden to special interests on both sides of the aisle. This article is neither a condemnation of one side, nor an endorsement of another. Since 1994, Republicans have controlled congress and since 2000, they added the White House. This allowed the right wing whackos to become drunk with power and begin to plan on abusing the system. We are now beginning to see the first shots fired at our way of life from the far right, and they come from South Dakota. Now that the Supreme Court has presumably had its power tipped to the right (with the addition of Justices Alito and Roberts), 30 years of hand ringing over Roe Versus Wade is about to be challenged. Sadly, though, it will not be done in an intelligent, reasonable manner because the right wing whackos have taken over and are flexing the full might of their muscle. Most Americans are reasonable, moderate people. Most of us believe, for example, that cigarette smoking and gun ownership should be legal, just with reasonable boundaries. Whackos on the left want to see them both banned. When it comes to abortion, most Americans want to see them performed as rarely as possible, but whenever necessary. Whackos on the left (about 10% of the population) believe that abortion is a reasonable method of birth control. Whackos on the right believe there should never be an abortion ever, regardless of the circumstances…even if the baby to be is a freak child created out of a father raping his own teenage daughter. One of my favorite things in life is to point out truths in America and have people call me insane. Many people will read that last line of that last paragraph and say things like, "oh, Rob, that's just silly. No one believes that!" Wanna bet? South Dakota has just passed a law outlawing abortion… all abortion, even in the case of rape or incest. Read the story here: Imagine that. In America 2006, a married woman can be gang raped and forced to carry the child of one of 6 men she's never met and give birth to it, while her husband watches helplessly. In America 2006, a woman can be raped by her grandfather and forced to give birth to his daughter. How sick is this? For those of you who will medicate yourselves by making ignorant proclamations like "who cares, that's South Dakota!" please spare me your stupidity. There's a reason why South Dakota went first with this idea… they knew they could make it a law there. The plan is to get the Supreme Court to endorse the law, either by saying so, or ignoring the case and thus deeming it a states' rights issue and allowing dozens of states to pass such laws. It can happen that quickly when you combine an ignorant electorate with a party drunk on power.
