Wednesday, April 22nd, 2008 TOP 5 GREATEST FOOTBALL BROADCASTERS OF ALL TIME Overview: John Madden surprisingly retired from broadcasting and leaves behind him a stellar career, an unequaled footprint on the game of football that stretches from coaching to video games, and a renewed debate over great broadcasters. Way back in May of 2005 we listed the greatest sportscasters of all time; what if we narrowed it down to just football? Criteria: Any play by play, sideline or color commentator who has announced NFL football can be considered; they can also have announced other sports, but we’re grading them here solely on their football announcing. Rob's Notes: I think Troy Aikman is the best analyst in the game today, but he barely misses this list. Cosell was easily the most prolific, along with Madden, of all NFL broadcasters, but Al Michaels is the all time absolute pro. Joe Buck I don’t get. He’s nice enough and smooth enough, but hardly as great as his current stature would suggest. Arnie's Notes: Look here, it has never been as good to watch a game as it was when Howard Cosell did games. He didn't play favorites he called the game the way it was supposed to be called. He didn't rip or build up players just to do so like SOOOOO many do today.(Hello Aikman I'm talking to you!!!!)
