TOP 5 LEAD SINGERS OF ALL TIME

Overview: Inspired by the embarrassing display of the new version of Journey at the Super Bowl pre-game show (now featuring some karaoke singer from the Philippines as opposed to Steve Perry), it is time to record for history the greatest lead singers of all time.

Criteria: Only lead singers of bands (3 or more members), not duos, are eligible. The specific criterion for what makes a great lead singer is all encompassing; it isn’t just whether or not they are talented vocally; it includes also their presence, their ability to entertain and their overall “ass-kicking factor.”

Rob's Notes:  Bono is not on my list because U2 hasn’t had a great album since the Joshua Tree and he is so annoying away from the stage; James Hetfield isn’t on the list because Metallica is the sum of all of its parts and Jim Morrison and Roger Daltrey aren’t on the list because the Doors and the Who are the two most overrated rock bands of all time.

Arnie's Notes: Look here, as far as lead singers go you are hard pressed to EVER find a cooler, more kick-ass lead singer than Axl Rose.  He told Metallica that he wouldn't go onstage after James was burned in Canada and that started a riot.  So what I'm saying is that if a lead singer can cause a riot then he is pretty damn BADASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Arnie's Top 5 -

5. Gwen Stefani of “No Doubt.” On her own, she stinks, with the band she’s one of the best female vocalists alive. And she’s hot.

4. Don Henley; The Eagles.

3. Jon Bon Jovi; the quintessential 80’s band leader and the singer of the biggest selling single of the decade and most repeated and replayed song of that era today; “Livin on a prayer.”

2. Robert Plant, Led Zeppelin. Enough said

1. Brian Johnson AC/DC. Here’s why; he took over for a legend (Bon Scott who died in 1980) and promptly released the best selling album in the group’s history and the second best selling album ever, anywhere (Back in Black). That’s just incredible.

HONORABLE MENTIONS -

- David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar cancel one another; Van Halen is, similar to Metallica, the sum of its parts and the fact that Van-Hagar was as commercially successful as Van-Roth proves that.

- Chris Cornell; one of the best pure singers of our time, but he can’t hold a band together to save his life.

5. Easy-E

4. Steve Perry

3. Vince Neil

2. David Lee Roth

1. Axl Rose
