TOP 5 GREATEST GOLFERS OF ALL TIME

Overview: This weekend is the first (and some say best) major golf tournament of the year, the Master's in Augusta, Georgia. In honor of that, it's time to list the greatest golfer of all time.

Criteria: Any golfer to have competed professionally is eligible, but understand, we agree that unless you are a man from the PGA tour, you aren't even up for discussion, since that's where the best compete. Thus, there will be no women, no long-drive exhibitionists, no miniature golfers and no Olympians.

Rob's Notes: When it comes to golf, only winning matters and to define the best in golf, winning when it matters counts; just like in the NFL. If you haven't won at least one Super Bowl, you can't possibly be one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time (although it doesn't work in reverse...just winning a Super Bowl doesn't automatically make you one of the greatest quarterbacks...think: Doug Williams and Trent Dilfer); similarly, in golf, if you haven't won majors, you aren't one of the best...(since hundreds of different golfers have won at least one major)... got it? Good.

Arnie's Notes: Look here, as far as golfers go there has been, and NEVER will be another Ben Hogan.  The man with the perfect swing.  A man that people would spend money to watch practice for 8 hours a day hitting golf balls.  And up until Tiger Woods the ONLY man to win three major championships in a row, and would have won all 4 but the PGA was the same week as the British Open.

Arnie's Top 5 -

5. Ben Hogan (a courageous story for the second half of his career following a near fatal bus accident. Truth is, though, he sucked serious ass early in his career; he could have been the best ever had he not been an idiot early in life. Using the near tragedy of his accident to elevate his stature is intellectually dishonest).

4.  Gary Player (He won a total of 160 tournament worldwide, compared to Arnold Palmer’s 94…Player also won 9 majors, 4th most)

3. Sam Snead (most PGA victories ever by anyone, even more than Nicklaus and 7 major championships, placing him in the top 5 most majors list)

2. Tiger Woods (He will one day, without a doubt be the greatest ever by all measures. All he lacks now is the perspective of history)

1. Jack Nicklaus (more majors than anyone in history by far, second most career victories, and a true ambassador of the game)

HONORABLE MENTIONS -
Arnold Palmer (His stats don’t make him one of the 5 best, but his intangibles make him 6th best).

5. Bobby Jones

4. Tiger Woods

3. Jack Nicholaus

2. Arnold Palmer

1. Ben Hogan
