Updated May 5th, 2008 MADE OF HONOR Okay so the new chick flick ‘MADE OF HONOR’ with Patrick Dempsey is a pretty cute movie and I enjoyed it except for one small portion that just had my blood boiling! So the scene is Patrick Dempsey who by the way plays the maid of honor for his best friend who he actually figures out he is in love with and is trying to find the best way to tell her....okay so back to the scene that ticked me off…Patrick is sitting in a restaurant with 3 other bridesmaids and the girls are getting each other’s sizes for the dresses, 2 of the girls are thin and one is on the heavy side. So of course one of the thin gals says she is a size 4, then they ask the heavier girl she says an 8 which leads them to almost choke on their drinks, this so far is not the part I have issue with except of course the way the girls responded to her saying a size 8. The part that pushed this over the edge was one of the thin gals said wouldn’t you be more comfortable in let’s say a size 12!! Hollywood ALWAYS goes to the size 12 as if that is the standard fat size!! I have written and spoken about the many shapes and sizes of women and how one gal can wear an 8 and look toned and fit and how another can also wear an 8 and appear to look bigger than the other gal. Why is this? Glad you asked….bone structure and height. So when I see Hollywood generalize a size 12 it makes my blood boil!! The actress in the movie who they have playing the ‘fat girl’ is Emily Nelson. When you see pictures of her she is not your standard size 0 or 2 that Hollywood wants to fit all women into yet is she a size 12? She could be. Depending on her height and bone structure, while I have seen many women who are a size 12 and look much smaller than this actress I also know enough about the female body to know this is possible. Sharon Stone for example is a tall and thin woman many would think she must be a size 2 or 4. Nope she has admitted to being a size 8 to size 10. Surprise you? It shouldn’t. However, I understand why it does because we as a society have ALLOWED Hollywood to generalize women and their size. We have been brainwashed into thinking sizes 0 – 4 are the ultimate sizes to strive for, size 6 is okay, size 8 is pushing it and heaven for bid if you wear a double digit!!! Let’s remember you can wear a size 4 and be an unhealthy person. You can also wear a size 12 and be within your weight range and have all your stats check out to be perfectly healthy. For a town such a Hollywood who prides itself on promoting healthy eating and exercise they loose all credibility with me when they still focus on size and that alone must mean you are fat. As I watched that scene I thought what was the freaken point of that scene, honestly it didn’t make or break the movie. Oh that’s right the point of the scene was to take an actress who is heavier than the other actresses and have her be the ‘fat girl’ instead of actually giving her a character to play! Oh and for more comedy let’s have her starving herself drinking some diet drink the whole time just to try and get into a size 8 and then have the size 8 dress the day of the wedding split down the sides when she sits down cause making fun of someone who is heavy is so under down in movies!! There are a lot of causes that touch me and this my friends is one of them, I will preach this until the day I die, we as women are more than a number on a scale and more than a size on our clothes. Both of which do not make you a good, successful, loveable, intelligent being. Character does not come from a scale or size 2, character is something you build from within. The person you are on the inside follows you wherever you go, you go from a size 10 to a size 6 or a 6 back to a 10 and guess what unless you have built your inner self and character those sizes are not going to make any difference in your life and the day that we all embrace this will help this to be A Wonderful Life!
