A PREGNANT MAN

If you haven’t heard by now, there is a man who is pregnant. Before you wonder how the heck is that possible? The man whose name is Thomas was once a female. Thomas is a transgender male he is married to a woman and is 6 months pregnant. Thomas during the process of change from female to male did have his breast surgically removed but decided to not mess with his female reproductive organs, this is how he has been able to be pregnant.

First off I must make it CLEAR that I am not against transgender folks, I can’t even imagine what it must be like to be born in the wrong body that looks female but you know you are truly a male. For those that finally except that and start the change I realize it must not be an easy road and I do commend you. With that said I do have to say I am just not sure where I stand with Thomas’s situation. Transgender organizations at the time of the Oprah show airing of Thomas’s story themselves were not comfortable with the idea of a transgender male becoming pregnant because they themselves told him they don’t believe society is ready for this. I think they could be right. This is killing me because I am a pretty open minded person. Some folks see Thomas pregnant and just get all weird owed out because it doesn’t look right to them. Please that is not where I am coming from, hell we all have something weird about ourselves!! This is a deeper issue for me. I am all for female empowerment. I am all for women having careers that were once only male driven, I am all for a man staying home to raise the babies while a woman works, I am all for women being leaders and I know at one time society wasn’t for these things but in my opinion that was because of our ignorance not because of something biological. With that said I also know and fully except that men and women do have physical and biological differences. That is one of the great things with transgender folks because someone who is transgender knows that fact all too well, they recognize the differences between men and women with their own internal struggles. They know they are truly a male or female because of these differences with the genders. I guess that is why I don’t fully understand Thomas not completely making the change, not for me to judge just wondering? I know in his interview he did state that he wanted to be able to use one of his eggs for a surrogate pregnancy but decided to become pregnant himself. His wife can no longer become pregnant, she does have 2 older children from a previous relationship. In he and his wife’s eyes he is just carrying the baby and once the baby is born he will be the dad and his wife will be the mother. I think this is where my deeper issue and struggle with this comes in to play, I am liberal minded and have a deep faith in God, I realize the conflict I put myself in!!!! I think in general not just with Thomas’s situation we have come to a point in our world that no matter what we are going to get pregnant, we spend hundreds of thousands of dollars sometimes to make that happen when maybe God wanted us to adopt, or not have children so we could have more time and money to help others? We have become so obsessed with having our own offspring that is takes the place of wanting to be a parent. It’s like the girl who is obsessed with her wedding and the wedding plans but doesn’t think of the marriage. Are we know turning it up a notch that a man will become pregnant if the woman can’t just to have our own offspring, our own blood line? My prayer is that by the time this child is old enough to understand that her (they are having a girl!) dad carried her in his womb that society won’t outcast this precious innocent child and we will maybe have a better understanding of the situation and that would help this to be A Wonderful Life.
