June 21st, 2010 RECOVERING CATHOLIC Anyone else feel guilty about becoming a recovering Catholic?? As long as I can remember being Catholic was a huge deal, something to really be proud of and if someone wasn’t Catholic you felt sorry for them. It was like being a part of something that only the special people are a part of! Not to mention I am Italian so naturally you had to be Catholic, they go hand in hand, why would you have one without the other, that just wouldn’t make sense. Baptism, check…First Holy Communion, check..Confirmation, check..what a great Catholic I am! But what does that mean besides doing rituals that you are told you need to complete to be official?? Don’t get me wrong there is something comforting about the whole process, the tradition and symbolism of it all I actually liked, problem is I haven’t learned much throughout the years about the Bible, it just really wasn’t encouraged to study it and question it, you just show up for Mass and pick up your Missals and it’s all there for you, prayers, readings and chants. For the first time I am actually reading stories in the bible and studying them not just reading scripture that inspires me, but actually reading the stories and questioning things that I need clarification on, it isn’t that taboo thing of ‘you are not supposed to question anything pertaining to God’, ya know actually I think God understands that as humans we will want to try and find answers and I think he is okay with that, we may not always find the answer and that is where our faith comes in but studying his word myself without a priest interpreting it for me I have come to the conclusion that God is a-ok with. I know I will always been drawn to the tradition of being Catholic and the beauty of the Cathedrals and wanting to light candles for my father(god rest his soul) but it’s Wonderful to know that there is a whole book of amazing stories that I have direct access to, now let’s just get over the guilt of it!! Drop me a line to let me know your thoughts on my "It's a Wonderful Life" column... |
