IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE - ARCHIVES

April 27th, 2009

YOU'RE NOT SELFISH, YOU'RE SELF ABSORBED!!!

Okay, so for years Rob has been saying how it is good to be selfish. That you need to put yourself first and do what’s right for you. By doing so those around you benefit because ultimately you are happy with you, your choices, your life and you in turn have more to give. Example…if you are always are running around doing for others, over committing yourself and only making decisions based on everyone else’s needs you end up losing who you are, getting burnt out and then you are no good to anyone including yourself. Nurturing yourself, loving yourself and taking care of you is really one of the necessities in life, being a better you does benefit you and those around you. This has taken many years for me to embrace because growing up with Religion, I am Catholic and somewhat recovering!! You are taught that being selfish is very wrong and you should always be thinking of others, helping others and not getting caught up in yourself.

Honestly I think we have Selfish confused with Self Absorbed! Selfish in the way I described above is a positive thing, self absorption however is all around negative. Our society seems to be swimming in self absorption. From not holding doors or elevators open for people, to not saying thank you when someone does, to walking slowly in the middle of a parking lot as a car is right behind you trying to park, to bumping into people and not saying excuse me….to ruining weddings, birthdays or any other special event in someone else’s life because you are so self absorbed, you are all that matters, the list goes on and on…!! Manners and decency seem to go out the window with those that are self absorbed. Self absorption is the evil twin of Selfish! Realizing that selfishness can be used for the positive helps this to be A Wonderful Life!
