February 15th, 2010 UNITING SOLDIERS By now you know I am a sucker for the Heroes Among Us section in People magazine, still gotta have my gossip but I love reading about real people doing amazing things. A few magazines ago, the one where Heidi Montag was on the cover for all her plastic surgery, ughhh that girl I actually feel sorry for her though, it’s sad she is so unhappy that she actually believes changing her appearance will make life grand when in actuality doing all the hard work to change our insides is where it’s at. After reading her ‘story’ yes of course I read it, like I said I am a sucker for this shit! I turn the page and a great dose of reality thank God was there, standing in the photo on the page was Walt Fricke, 61 who at 19 was a pilot in the Vietnam War. As a pilot he almost lost his left foot when one of his helicopter rockets misfired, he spent months in a military hospital that was about 500 miles from his fiancé and family. It wasn’t until they came to visit that he started doing better. It was that experience that eventually lead him to start Veterans Airlift Command, www.veteransairlift.org a nonprofit that provides free air transportation to wounded warriors, veterans and their families through a national network of volunteer aircraft owners and pilots. Helloooooo what a blessing to so many military families out there who otherwise could not afford the trip or have to wait for too long before they can see their wounded warrior while trying to gather the funds. It’s crazy because I think we all think this kind of stuff is just taken care of and many times it isn’t or we just don’t realize who is behind it, in this case aircraft owners and pilots who are volunteering! A lot of the folks that own these planes ask if they can come along because to them it is more of an honor than charity they are appreciative of the sacrifices our men and women make. So in this crazy world we live in there will always be the Heidi Montag’s who seem to live on their own planet of self absorb shin, and thankfully there will also be everyday people doing a little or a lot extra to help brighten the lives of others and that makes life Wonderful! Drop me a line to let me know your thoughts on my "It's a Wonderful Life" column... |
